ShuffleComp Credits :

The ShuffleComp is a musical interactive fiction competition where you make games based on songs, which are submitted by other entrants.

I've decided to base my game on every songs of my playlist.

The 8 songs were:

Little Stabs at Happiness - Fujiya & Miyagi : A verse of the song is described and mentioned as we watch Ida's car from the balcony.

When Doves Cry - Prince : It is the main theme from the other dimension. I used a distorted choir version

Witches - Alice Phoebe Lou : You can listen to part of the song on the walkman in the attic.

Slide Tackle - Japanese Breakfast : I slipped in a piece of sheet music to play the bass part on the synthesizer

Kwon Eunbi - Glitch : I put an extract of the chorus and the video clip on the computer in the bedroom of Linus, the protagonist.

True Feeling - Galantis : I used the band members' names and nationalities (sweden) as inspiration for the plot's location.

Heaven - The Walkmen : The magnets on the refrigerator form the chorus of the song, which tells the story of the protagonist and Ida, her former girlfriend.

Sediment - Pinback : The subject of the song, and of the video clip, is the existence of extraterrestrials who would come to Earth, so I adapted my story in that direction.

I also decided to submit this project for the SeedComp! sprouting round, and used seeds from talented people :

I only used one of the images, but I discovered the Weirdcore aesthetic, which led me down paths I'd never have thought of treading.

All the images that appear when listening to the Walkman in the attic are taken from Martyn's superb photographs.

Incredibly eerie game. Love the art, which gets ten times creepier when you find the odd lens (is that an Ouija planchette?) letting you see things that aren't there. Also love Linus's character as a depressed 23-year-old NEET who's more ambivalent about eldritch horrors than any normal person would be. There's so much detail and effort put into this, from the interactive piano to the interactive fridge magnets to the Walkman. Delightfully weird.

If I had any criticism to offer, it'd be that like a commenter down below, I found the ending slightly unsatisfying. The general atmosphere more than makes up for it, though.

Amazing experience! Thank you so much for making this game! Great fusion between the music art and story. Wish you luck on the game jams and thank you for introducing us to decker ^^ (1o/1o)!

I will say the ending was a bit unsatisfying, as I would love to know more about the story behind what happens, although I also feel I may be missing some clues. Either way the experience is great! The dither is superb and really sets the tone right. The audio elements were perfect and enhanced it a lot. I love the pieces of story that I could put together and how the narration reveals more and more. Especially want to shoutout some of the interactable objects, it made the game feel so much more alive and real. Worth a playthrough!
